Know the Rules of The Road!
Bicyclists must ride in the same direction as cars. Bicyclists must obey stop signs and stop lights. Bicyclists must yield to pedestrians. If you are under 17, you are required to wear a helmet when riding a bike (or roller-blading or skateboarding, etc).
If a bicyclist has dismounted their bike and is walking (with their bike), they are then considered a pedestrian. Pedestrians should walk in the direction facing traffic so that they can see cars and bicycles coming. Pedestrians, you still have to be alert whenever you’re crossing the street. You must look both ways and use good judgement before stepping off of a curb to cross. If you’re a pedestrian crossing at an intersection where traffic is being regulated by a traffic light, drivers are not required to stop to let a pedestrian start crossing if a traffic signal is telling them to “go.” Pedestrians also must yield the right of way to vehicles IF they’re trying to cross AND they’re not in a marked crosswalk or at a street corner (these are considered unmarked crosswalks).
Drivers must stop for pedestrians in crosswalks and at street corners. Make it a habit to check street corners when driving, especially when making a turn.
As you can see, this is a team effort that requires alertness, good judgment, and patience from all parties involved.
