35th Annual Harvey Cedars Catboat Races

“Harvey Cedars’ summer activities come to a traditional end with the annual catboat races on Sunday, Sept. 3, off Sunset Park.
The event begins with a skippers meeting at 12:30 p.m. at the park near the water tower, followed by races beginning at 1 p.m. An awards ceremony is held at the park gazebo, where there will also be beer and wine, hot dogs and sandwiches.
Robert Rue, event coordinator, said there are three categories with the single-sail crafts: 14-foot “lil cats,” 16-foot “bobcats” and 18-foot “fat cats.” The registration fee is $10.
Rue said participants sail a course that includes two trips around Sandy Island, located west of the park out in the bay. The average time for completing the 8-mile course is between two and three hours. He said during the race, there are patrol boats to ensure everyone’s safety.” – Excerpt from the Sandpaper, 8/16/23
